5 things to do when camping
Summer is camping season! It's fun, it's memories, and it's essential to stay hidden to preserve the natural beauty of the places you visit. Here are 5 things you can do to camp responsibly:
1. Bring a garbage bag with you
Make sure you leave no trace of your visit. Pick up all your waste, including small debris, and take it with you until you find a suitable bin. Never leave organic waste such as fruit peels or food scraps, as they can disrupt the local ecosystem. Animals are not short of food and especially do not eat banana peels ;)
And it is not better to get rid of it on the side of the road, it attracts animals and increases the risk of accidents.
For the more advanced, add a compost bag to put your food waste in :)
2. Use lightweight, environmentally friendly products
When shopping for your camping trip, choose biodegradable and environmentally friendly products: chemical-free and that won't pollute waterways. This includes soaps, detergents, hygiene products (e.g., toothpaste), and even sunscreen!
Similarly, it's best to opt for waterless products like dental lozenges or hand soap sheets. First, they're lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry and saving space in your backpack or camping gear. They also require little to no water to use, which is especially beneficial in areas where water is limited or difficult to access. Additionally, waterless products reduce waste because they don't require plastic bottles or bulky packaging. Finally, they won't get too hot or freeze in cold weather.
3. Respect the flora and fauna
When camping, respect local flora and fauna. Do not disturb wild animals, do not approach their habitats or nests, and avoid picking wild plants or flowers.
Follow local nature conservation regulations and stick to marked trails to minimize your impact on the environment. It may sound boring, but if we want our children to have these kinds of experiences in the years to come, we need to preserve this environment.
4. Avoid plastic packaging
Plastic bags, Ziploc bags, and plastic wrap should be avoided because they are lightweight and can easily blow away. This debris can end up in nature and become traps for animals, causing considerable damage. Instead, opt for reusable cloth bags, mesh bags, or reusable containers to transport your food and other items. These alternatives are more sustainable, reduce the amount of plastic waste, and are less likely to cause harm to the environment and wildlife.
5. Practice responsible fire
If you do light a campfire, be sure to follow local safety regulations and minimize your impact on the environment. Learn more here.
Avoid burning chemically treated materials or non-combustible waste. A fire is not a dump ;)
Make sure to completely extinguish the fire before leaving the area and observe any fire restrictions or blackout periods to avoid fire hazards.
By adopting these simple actions, you can help preserve the environment while camping and inspire other campers to do the same. If you want to see all our camping products, click here.
