Traveling responsibly, yes it’s possible!
Let's not hide it, air transport is considered one of the most polluting modes of transport and contributes significantly to climate change and environmental degradation.
Air travel emissions represent around 234 kg of CO2 per passenger for a 2.5 hour flight. ( The Guardian )
So what can we do to try to restore balance? Here are five things we can do for the planet, even if you're flying:
1. Offset your carbon emissions
Some airlines offer the option to offset your carbon emissions when you book. This is the simplest option. Alternatively, you can offset some of your carbon emissions by supporting emission reduction projects or carbon offsetting initiatives. Many organizations offer carbon emissions calculators to help you estimate your footprint and allow you to invest in projects that reduce emissions or protect carbon sinks, such as reforestation or renewable energy.
Here are some of them:
2. Opt for public transport whenever possible
Once you arrive at your destination, prioritize sustainable modes of transportation. Opt for walking, cycling, public transportation, or ride-sharing options whenever possible. Not only does this reduce your carbon footprint, but it also allows you to experience more of the local culture and immerse yourself in the environment.
3. Respect local culture and biodiversity
Learn about the customs and culture of the country you are visiting, and respect them during your stay. Be sensitive to biodiversity and the local environment by avoiding disturbing natural ecosystems, not taking souvenirs from endangered species, not feeding wild animals, and not disturbing coral reefs or sensitive natural habitats.
4. Encourage responsible tourism
Choose to support local businesses: Choose restaurants that offer local and sustainable products, visit local markets, shop at small local shops, and buy locally made handcrafted souvenirs instead of imported mass-produced items. This helps boost the local economy and preserve traditional culture.
5. Choose environmentally friendly activities and attractions
When planning your travel activities, opt for environmentally friendly experiences. Avoid tourist attractions that exploit wildlife or contribute to environmental degradation. Instead, prioritize visits to natural parks, conservation-focused excursions, ecotourism activities, and local environmental conservation initiatives.
By adopting these actions when traveling abroad, you can help minimize your environmental impact and promote more responsible and sustainable tourism. Air travel shouldn't be a source of shame, but rather an opportunity to take additional steps to offset and reduce your carbon footprint.
