In Canada, nearly 60% of food is wasted, and our waste generates 4.6% of greenhouse gases (GHG).
Current solutions, such as composting and biomethanization, degrade the nutritional value of food and generate by-products with little added value.
At the same time, while global meat consumption is set to double by 2050, raising animals for food consumption emits 6.3% of GHGs. What's more, the production of animal feed pollutes water, depletes soil and degrades ecosystems.
Insects are a sustainable source of protein for both human and animal consumption, and can be used in poultry and fish feeds.
Insects can be bred from certain types of traceable food residues. Insects also convert food into body mass far more efficiently than most other farmed animals, while emitting fewer GHGs.
Insect droppings also have fertilizing properties that can optimize growth and stimulate plant immune systems.
