Greener Holidays; Some Tips:

1. Offer an activity instead of a gift

Why not give the gift of time and fun for a few hours or a day, instead of a brief moment by the tree? Creating happy memories and spending time with a loved one is worth much more than the latest technological gadget that the person can always buy themselves. This also goes for children, take them for the day and go do fun activities with them; it will be a gift for both the children and the parents!

2. Or, offer a gift certificate!

If you still want to give a gift, or doing an activity isn't a good option, offer a gift certificate. Choose a place you know the person already shops, and let them treat themselves to a gift they choose. Or, consider a gift certificate for a restaurant, spa, or activity the person really enjoys.

Not sure which location to choose? Pick up a gift certificate to a location that includes multiple stores, restaurants, or product categories.

3. Don’t forget to choose eco-friendly packaging

In Canada, 540,000 tons of waste are created by packaging and bags during the holidays. All that, just to tear off the paper for a second or two. Instead, opt for reusable fabric packaging, bags, and bows, and don't forget to bring your bags with you when you shop for your gifts. Are you embarrassed to offer packaging that you want to recycle? The first time the person sees a fabric wrapper, they're sure to comment. Take the opportunity to tell them that it's an eco-friendly reusable alternative, and that's why you'll recycle the packaging once the gifts are unwrapped. Next year, everyone will already know that you recycle your packaging! Tip: For a hostess gift, you can easily find ideas online for wrapping gifts, even a bottle of wine, in a beautiful tea towel that will be inexpensive and will be a small gift in itself.

If you want to give a card, choose one made from recycled paper or seeded paper. Or, simply eliminate the card altogether, which often doesn't say anything very interesting.

4. Finally, ask your loved ones for gift lists!

If you really want to give something to your loved one, why not ask for a wish list beforehand? This way, you avoid buying a gift that will end up gathering dust, or worse, ending up in the trash. If it's for an adult, chances are the person would prefer to have a little less of a surprise than receive a gift they don't want. And, if it's for a child, ask the parents for guidance; chances are the child has already told their parents (several times, even!) what they wanted to receive.
