Article: A zero-waste Halloween

A zero-waste Halloween

Every holiday is a bit like a challenge to our values. Don't you think?

Here are some tips for a zero-waste Halloween that's 100% pure fun!

The pumpkin

  • Carve your pumpkin 24-48 hours before Halloween
  • Collect as much flesh as possible to cook and freeze
  • Protect the remaining flesh with aluminum foil.
  • Paint it with non-toxic paint
  • The last option is not to carve your pumpkin: decorate it with a hat, glasses, makeup, buttons, etc. You can then clean it and store it for months in a cool, dry place.

The decoration

  • Draw on your windows with natural paint (see recipe idea here )
  • Use elements from nature: dead leaves, branches, etc.
  • Take this opportunity to do some crafts with the kids. Pinterest is full of wonderful ideas that are super easy to make and don't require a lot of materials. Jesus Sauvage 's blog is full of wonderful ideas, almost all of which Audrey has tried!

The disguises

  • Find used bargains! On Marketplace, on Facebook groups for swaps, neighborhood groups, schools, on Kijiji, etc. There are tons of them!
  • Ask people around you if they have any costumes they can lend you.
  • Use old clothes that you no longer use and find a DIY on Pinterest ;)

You have the right ;)

These are all options we've tested and continue to do year after year. It's very easy to get carried away and consume without thinking about the consequences. This is normal, it's the power of successful marketing, and let's face it, some companies are very good at creating false needs in us! So if you feel trapped, ask yourself these three questions before making a purchase:

  1. How long will I use these purchases?
  2. Do I really need it?
  3. Will I be able to use them for other occasions?

Last thing: you have the right to succumb, to get carried away and to buy decorations and/or costumes. We are not judging anyone here, we just want to raise awareness and inform you that (easy and fun) options exist :)
